América Sánchez

The artist and graphic designer America Sanchez (Buenos Aires, 1939) arrived in Barcelona in 1965, and, since then, his connections with the city - until he became one of the key figures in the reinterpretation and invention of the city's graphic identity — led him to design from the symbol and logo of the Barcelona 1992 Olympic candidacy to that of the missing Vinçon, passing through Cerveses Moritz, Escofet, Galeria G, Mobles 114, Museu Picasso, Laie, Torraspapel or Vieta.

Notable was his work as a teacher at the Eina School - he created the logo and the subsequent redesigns - where he was one of the main promoters and defenders of the practice of drawing. Equipped with an unmistakable calligraphic style—as seen in the signage he designed for the Casa Camper Hotel (2005)—in his role as a designer he has promoted a vindication of anonymous popular graphics. But his creativity goes beyond the scope of design and he uses it in a more artistic dimension, highlighting series, such as the Trochi & Mochi style drawings, the graphically intervened Polaroids and, without a doubt, his photomontages, more than a hundred and a half, framed under the title 'Modern Iconography.'

America Sanchez won the National Design Award in 1992 and with the publication of Barcelona graphic she would receive the City of Barcelona Award (2001). The Lafuente Archive and the Generalitat of Catalonia organized a retrospective of the work of America Sanchez at the Palau Robert in Barcelona (October 21, 2019-February 23, 2020) and at the Blanquerna Cultural Center-Bookstore in Madrid (February 28 as of May 3, 2020). Ediciones La Bahía has published a book-catalogue on the occasion of this exhibition: America Sanchez. Classic, Modern, Jazz and Tropical.
